ABSTRACT

Teachers can be better reading role models by not acting like they have to read harder books because they are older, and instead reading books at our level so kids and teachers can connect. Teachers should not be afraid to make changes. There are many ways that the teacher reading identity can be infused into our learning community or school without it becoming the focal point. Publicly setting goals with students and then performing the same check-in as they are expected to means that my students see what adult reflection can look like and also gives them an opportunity to know that teachers are not perfect. Students setting reading goals is widely recognized as boosting their reading achievement. The teacher's reading journeys can become the roadmap for how others' reading journeys should look and feel like, often with devastating results; students who leave their rooms more frustrated with reading than they were when they came in.
