ABSTRACT

The economy and versatility of wood light frame construction is fully demonstrated in the making of walls. Stud walls have evolved as an "open system" in which there are simple rules that govern the relationship between the parts: the structure, the enclosure, and the services of the building. The home is constructed with double stud walls, triple-glazed windows, and a well-insulated slab, including innovative detailing throughout. The Arlington House is located on a half-acre lot in a verdant neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia, near the Potomac River. The house features elements of the Craftsman style, with a modern interior and a super-energy-efficient envelope. The Warren Woods Ecological Field Station is the first certified passive house laboratory in North America. The CH2 project was a follow-up to PDX Living, LLC's first speculative net zero energy passive house project, the O2Haus. The house uses no foam and incorporated a broad strategy of fire-wise measures for resiliency.
