ABSTRACT

Windows pressed into the corner of a room present design opportunities and technical challenges. To capture a diag onal view, or strengthen the connection to the outdoors, the building corner between window units needs to be slender. Contemporary standards of practice for multifamily apartments and condominiums place a much greater emphasis on the control of water entry at the window interface and through the window itself. The Viridescent Building case study again demonstrates the use of a full-depth plywood throat at the window opening, but, in this case, the window is moved all the way to the outside. The layered construction of a passive house wall presents numerous options regarding the position of the window within a very thick wall. Door openings present all of the challenges of windows, with a few in addition. The connection of doors to the structural frame is even more important because of the impact loads when they swing shut.
