ABSTRACT

OCTOBER 7, 2001: IN RESPONSE TO THE 9/11 STRIKES, MILITARY operations against targets in Afghanistan are launched by American and British forces. The objective is the destruction of Al Qaeda facilities, the apprehension of Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants, and the removal of the Taliban regime that has offered bin Laden and his organization safe haven inside Afghanistan. Soon after the initial assault on Taliban and Al Qaeda strongholds, the coalition ends the Taliban’s rule, tears down Al Qaeda’s camps, and forces Al Qaeda leaders and rank-and-file members to flee into Pakistan.
