ABSTRACT

From the beginning of recorded history, society has placed a premium on the detection of deception. In part, the fascination with deception may be attributed to the fact that it occurs so often in so many forms. Thus, “white lies, cover-ups, bluffing, euphemisms, masks, pretenses, tall-tales, put-ons, hoaxes, and other forms of falsehoods, fabrications, and simulations have coexisted with truthfulness and honesty in human communication for centuries” (Knapp & Comadena, 1979, p. 270).
