ABSTRACT

Two specialty areas of retail lighting are unique because they combine elements of theatrical production and retail design. These are retail shows and themed stores. In retail shows, actual performances or some variation of a production are created around a product, product line, or corporate/sales event. Fashion shows, trade shows, product unveilings, and corporate sales meetings are examples of these events. These projects usually take place outside of the retail environment and are frequently presented in ballrooms and conference or convention centers. They are known for their spectacle and sizable budgets and form another area of design known as corporate theatre/productions or industrials, which were introduced previously in Chapter 16. Themed stores are another specialty area of retail design where customers are immersed in a designed environment. Building decor, layout, displays, music and sounds, and even costumed sales clerks can contribute to this immersive experience. Several retailers that make use of heavily themed stores include the Disney Store, Build-a-Bear Workshop, and LEGO stores. Restaurants often make use of themed environments as well. Themed design is a specialty area that will be discussed in more detail later in this chapter.
