ABSTRACT

In this chapter I examine many of the ways in which light can be used to shape a viewer’s perception of the world around them. Several fundamental principles of visibility also form a significant focus of this chapter. What are several appropriate manners in which a lighting designer might reveal a subject to an audience? What are several aspects of control that we can use to create a given response in a viewer? Are there issues that may cause a negative impact on an observer’s experience? How much does a designer have to reveal to an audience? Each of these questions and many like them relate to how our vision is impacted by light and its manipulation. An effective lighting designer will learn to take command of the immense range of possibilities that are both available and acceptable for completing the task of visibility. At the same time, they must also remain sensitive to the repercussions that might come from lighting an object or environment.
