ABSTRACT
Along with music sociologists, scholars in musicology and cultural theory also have contributed to the debate on the relationship between sociocultural and musical values held by different social groups in society. From celebrating the American folk heritage to defending the traditions of Western classical music as the standard of cultural values, the learned opinions and reasoned arguments among ethnomusicologists generally derive from microsociological scholarship, whereas cultural theorists tend to take macrosociological perspectives.
