Punctuation helps to structure and explain your sentences, allowing your audience to understand more easily what you mean. Primarily, it lets your reader know when to pause and when to stop, how elements in the sentence relate and connect, and which elements occupy superior versus subordinate status. Proper punctuation especially aids in the readability of long sentences.
