ABSTRACT

In the 1920s, educators began developing readability formulas as a way of determining suitable reading books for different grade-school levels. They showed how tabulations of word and sentence length could measure writing complexity and thereby predict whether readers would understand what they read. Early readability formulas, however, were too complicated and tedious for everyday use.
