ABSTRACT
Voltaire’s observation noted above implicated not only individuals or groups but the entire human race in the depravity, atrocities, and recidivisms of our culture. Despite his confirmed agnosticism, he echoed the judgment of Hebrew scripture: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately corrupt” (Jeremiah 17:9).
