ABSTRACT

People often look at the relationships that other people form and wonder how or why the partners ever ended up together. Our curiosity is especially likely to be piqued when spouses seem to be badly mismatched—“odd fellows” whose pairing seems to defy the laws of nature and reason. “What can she possibly see in him?” we wonder. “What was he thinking? How did this relationship happen? It just doesn’t make any sense.” In such instances, we cannot imagine what the partners ever saw in each other that led them to form a relationship in the first place, never mind to institutionalize it with a marital contract.
