ABSTRACT
The time, energy, and other resources required to develop and maintain a relationship ensure that our first interaction with another is usually our last. Of those few encounters that are followed by subsequent interactions, most come to represent a superficial relationship that is minimally maintained. Some relationships, however, continue to grow and become close and enduring. Virtually all relationship development theorists assume that development entails increasing frequency of interaction and increasing levels of interdependence.
