ABSTRACT
I. Historical Context Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) designed a new relationship between citizens and their state in the face of the intense conflicts that permeated his society. Before explaining the particular dimensions of these conflicts and of the new citizen/state relationship, it is well worth discussing why Hobbes can be properly called a major architect of modern liberalism.
