ABSTRACT
TRADITIONS OF TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT t o understand the impact that new media have had on your ability to persuade and be persuaded by others, you must first understand the difference between traditional media and new media. t o make these connections, let’s turn to Walter o ng’s important works on the technologization of verbal communication. o ng was primarily concerned with the shift from orality to literacy and the impact that this shift would have on culture and education (1982). s ince then, many scholars have followed o ng’s lead in giving attention to the ways that technology impacts culture. t his development in thought has extended o ng’s attention to oral and print culture to include electronic culture and, more recently, the culture of new media. Let’s briefly consider each of these aspects of communication technology.
