ABSTRACT

Children love to experiment with sound-making objects in their environment. If you offer bells, drums, or wood sticks to first grade children, they will be delighted to try making sounds on each instrument. Children learn from experimenting with sound-making objects. The experimentation can be in large groups, small groups, or individual experimentation. Teachers may guide experiences or may create an environment for free exploration. The national music standard specific to playing instruments is performing on instruments, alone and with others, and playing a varied repertoire of music (National Association for Music Education 2007).
