ABSTRACT

M ulticultural psychology is American psychology, albeit a part of American psychology that has been neglected. For those who intend to live and work in North America, which includes most people reading this book, an understanding of the diverse groups

in North America is critical. Yet, most of the American psychology literature does not address cultural diversity. I have joked with my students that most psychology courses and textbooks should include a disclaimer that the theories and research to be presented have not been adequately evaluated with people of color and that it is unknown whether these theories and research apply to groups other than European Americans. This book is about the issues and people that are omitted from or marginalized in most other psychology textbooks and courses.
