THE PROCESS OF INTERPRETING: PRINCIPLES The listening component you are about to explore-interpreting messagesdiffers from other dimensions in that it requires not only motivation, knowledge, and skill, but also social sensitivity-an ability that is affected by differences in individual style. This makes it one of the most personal and complex components of the listening process. Effective listeners take into account the nonverbal and situational factors that influence the negotiation of meanings; in effect, they hear what is not said.
