ABSTRACT
Machu Picchu is one of the most spectacular archaeological sites in the world; but it was never a lost city, for the local farmers were well aware of its existence. What makes it so dramatic is its mountain setting, its testimony to the incredible skill of the Andeans in mastering climatic extremes.
