ABSTRACT

Despite the marked difference in their scholarly accomplishments, it appears as though many of us are more likely and willing to take the advice of the unproven John Gray rather than the established John Gottman. Not surprisingly, Gray’s ideas and lingo (starting from his catchy book title) have infiltrated popular culture, whereas Gottman’s name and research are less well-known to the general public. Perhaps part of this oversight is due to our misgivings about and unfamiliarity with science and the scientific method. As interested observers of human behavior and especially of romantic human behavior, many of us might be dubious about the use of the scientific method to understand it. In fact, one might wonder exactly how such methods could be applied to a topic so personal and intimate.
