ABSTRACT

Good editing lends a feeling of satisfaction from the time we spend with a page because of its physical beauty, the enjoyment of dense colors of ink balanced against white space, the movement of the eye as it is directed from item to item. Editing is a career track that runs parallel to reporting. It can also be a route to management. Editors of the editorial page, for example, can have considerable influence in their communities and within the newspaper. The challenges are to be a master of both words and visuals and to bring a fresh editing eye to stories and photos worked on earlier. The editor who covers news most likely will not write the editorials, however, but rely on the newspaper's publisher or manager for those. Challenges include working months ahead of production, foreseeing topics and developing stories and illustrations six months or more ahead of the publication date.
