ABSTRACT
Let’s begin with a discussion of a few basic concepts-conceptual tools-from the social sciences that I think might help you better understand the cultures we will explore. I am introducing these now so they are available when we move into the discussion of various cultural and religious views. But, before we begin, I’d like to ask you to participate in a short exercise from Box 4.1. The exercise is designed to provide a simple experience that might move you to become a bit more aware of the role of worldviews-in German, this is called weltanschauung. I think this kind of activity works because it makes its point with a minimum of jargon and explanation.
