ABSTRACT

Introduction The Arctic and Subarctic zones of the North American Arctic extend from Alaska, across northern Canada to Greenland (Figure 14.1). Canada is the third largest country in the world, trailing only Russia and China. Together the vast northern area covered by this chapter is almost twice the size of the rest of the continent. In addition it has always been North America’s most thinly populated region, an immense archaeological venue explored by a relatively small number of hardy researchers.
