ABSTRACT

Intuition inevitably has a major influence on hiring. And intuition can provide anexcellent basis for selecting a new employee-if one has the right intuition. There are managers who take the same kind of pride in sensing who would make a good employee as someone purchasing a used car takes in judging a good vehicle. In both situations a prediction is being made about future performance. In both cases, however, it is often necessary to go beyond the immediately apparent information and make guesses on more subtle data. When hiring employees and purchasing used cars, error rates are very high and mistakes are frequently costly.
