ABSTRACT

One of the most useful editing tools available to the video editor is SMPTE time code. (The complete formal name for this code is SMPTE/EBU [European Broadcasting Union] time code, but in common practice it is simply referred to as SMPTE time code.) SMPTE time code is an identification system in which each frame of video information is given a unique code number that identifies it in terms of hours, minutes, seconds, and frames. The first frame of video information is coded 00:00:00:01 (0 hours, 0 minutes, 0 seconds, and 1 frame). A frame of information 10 minutes into the tape would be coded 00:10:00:00 (0 hours, 10 minutes, 0 seconds, and 0 frames), and so on.
