ABSTRACT
The UK has long had significant international relations because people have constantly moved to and from Britain, because of its colonial past and because its power and survival have depended on global trade. This chapter examines these connections and activities in a historical context and also concentrates on three significant contemporary areas: foreign and defence policy, the Commonwealth and the European Union (EU).
