ABSTRACT

Chapter 11 covers the importance of school counselor technology competence. The chapter begins with an overview of the Association of Counselor Education and Supervision Technology Competencies that graduate students are expected to demonstrate upon degree completion. Next, the authors address the American School Counselor Association’s Ethical Standards for School Counselors related to the use of technology when implementing a comprehensive school counseling program. Readers will explore the uses of technology software typically provided to school counselors and how these software applications can be used to support communication and collaborate with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members. In addition, the authors discuss the ways to incorporate technology tools such as Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat to engage with various stakeholders. The chapter ends with recommendations for getting started with technology, developing school policies related to the Internet and social media use that considers their school, student, and community needs, and do’s and don’ts when incorporating technology into the comprehensive school counseling program.
