ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 addresses the need for assessing the competence and skill levels of school counselors–in-training through student learning outcomes. The authors discuss the methods of gathering student learning outcome data when designing program curricula and evaluating student performance using the 2016 Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) standards and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success competencies. In addition, the authors provide an overview of the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success database, which can be used to identify the expectations students who engage in a comprehensive school counseling program are expected to learn related to academic, career, and social/emotional domains. Finally, the readers will review the use of formative and summative assessments to measure prekindergarten to grade 12 student learning outcomes. Recommendations for additional readings are provided.
