ABSTRACT

The twenty or so scholars in attendance constituted a who’s who of leaders in conflict studies. Many later rewrote their conference presentations for inclusion in a compilation of essays edited by Burton and published a year or so later.1 The overall atmosphere was serious but friendly, with a mixture of intellectual camaraderie and competitiveness reminiscent of a faculty club. When it came to his turn to speak, Johan Galtung rose from his seat and addressed the participants in a tone that seemed surprisingly intense.
