ABSTRACT

The incognito God travels the road to Emmaus and meets up with two baffled disciples, Cleopas and an unnamed friend who are trying to make sense of all the events that have happened in Jerusalem. The man Jesus, whom they thought would redeem Israel, died, but then some of their women astounded them. As the two men wrestle with the meaning of it all, a stranger walks up. The story in the Gospel of Luke offers rich comedy. The men are unable to recognize that it is Jesus who joined them and asked what they were conversing about. The Academy Award-winning film has been duly analyzed as a transcendental and sacramental film, but its place in the canon of comedies seems more suspect. But grace comes with this Eucharist. As Alyosha dreams in The Brothers Karamazov, Jesus is at the wedding feast Himself and invites all to share in the feast.
