ABSTRACT

Romantic comedy begins with a conflict, a crisis, an obstacle to true love. The salvation of all mankind rests on one very improbable romantic comedy. Romantic comedy differs from screwball in that it tends toward a sentimental closure. The divine romantic comedy centers on that volatile dance that happens between potential lovers of any age. In romantic comedy, laughter is the result not of the expressing of emotion, but of the responding to the emotion. The basic structure of the romantic comedy film is made up of four acts. First, the story begins with the proto-lovers meeting. The second type of romantic comedy highlights mismatched lovers. The third type of romantic comedy is the sort of story where the proto-lovers do not become physical lovers. Finally to the resolution that transforms the proto-lovers into lovers who are then united in time for the end credits.
