ABSTRACT

A statistical package is just like a full-fledged bank that provides all banking and financial services. If rigorously defined, a statistical package is an integrated system of statistical computer programs with the versatility to process various types of data for all kinds of users. As a general purpose system, it is flexible regardless of the demarcation of disciplines, or of the restriction of the data types. It is equally useful for medical, biological, sociological, marketing, and communication sciences. Statistical package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), IBM Statistical Package, BMD Biomedical Computer Programs (BMD), and Statistical Analysis System (SAS) are typical statistical packages. Each is just like a car rental agency. After we fill out the form (job control language statements) we can use it, without knowing anything about the automotive engine and transmission. The purpose of a statistical package is to reduce the chores of computer programming, and to free the researcher from the technical details of computer programming so that he or she can devote him or herself to more creative tasks.
