ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the role of the creative arts in geographical education in the primary school. In the first section I explore creativity in geography and the role of the creative arts in education, including their contribution to children’s well-being. This leads to a discussion about how the creative arts can motivate and engage children, thereby raising achievement. In the second section I consider the implications for classroom practice and suggest a variety of practical ideas for teachers who wish to develop imaginative cross-curricular approaches. These include creative practices drawn from movement and dance, drama and role play, and visual art. The final section focuses on the exciting possibilities for using creative arts approaches to communicate the results of geographical enquiries in rich and meaningful ways.
