ABSTRACT

One summer afternoon while working on an independent feature along the San Mateo County coastline in California, a thin, quirky young woman stopped by our set to visit her husband, who was starring in the fi lm we were so busy with. Perhaps her exuberance had something to do with our pending day off or perhaps the fi lm she’d just worked on was causing her excitement. She chatted briefl y with us about the director and how she thought the fi lm might turn out “okay” and maybe get into a few festivals. The young woman I met that day had just wrapped the lead on Boys Don’t Cry . In a few months she would win the Academy Award for her performance. That day she was just another leading lady on an independent fi lm. Today she is the “A Lister” Hilary Swank.
