B ecau se th e w i ld e r n e s s a r e a s o f th e n a t i o n a l f o r e s t s a r e m ore u n u s u a l th a n th e m ore i n t e n s i v e l y d e v e lo p e d r e c r e a t i o n a r e a s , th e y te n d to draw some v i s i t o r s from lo n g e r d i s t a n c e s . H ow ever, th e d i s t a n c e - d e c a y f u n c t io n a p p l i e s h e r e a l s o . To t h i s e x t e n t , th e b e n e f i t s o f w i ld e r n e s s a r e l o c a l o r r e g i o n a l r a t h e r th a n n a t i o n a l .
