ABSTRACT

Ministers believe that long-stay hospitals are unsuitable places for children to grow up in because they do not provide a stimulating environment. Therefore it is important to assess the quality of care children receive in hospitals and the changes that result when children move to alternative care settings such as the Croxteth Park Project. As there is no agreed way of assessing quality of care, we shall in the first section of this chapter discuss the general issues associated with assessing quality. In the second section we shall discuss the children's daily life and in the third, child-staff interactions.
