ABSTRACT

HERE, PAINT THIS: THE BASICS OF HOW TO GET PAINT FROM THE BUCKET TO YOUR SET

Perhaps you have assigned a few students or staff the job of

simply painting something. “Here, take this and paint that,

please.” Perhaps it’s a couple of rehearsal cubes or the back of

a flat. Then, when you check back on them 15 minutes later,

you discover they are only half-finished when you expected to

find them idle waiting for new instructions. It’s about then you

realize you haven’t taught them how to paint. Not fancy faux-

finishes or special effects, simply the most basic steps in getting

the paint from the bucket and onto the set. We need to

remember that basic painting is no different than learning how

to use a cordless drill or a pneumatic stapler. They aren’t

difficult, but there are basic techniques that need to be taught.
