ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the trends in increased cooperation between the countries in different areas. It presents a comparative analysis of economic and, in particular, investment cooperation. The ongoing intensification of cooperation between Kazakhstan and Russia was the result of several factors, including the signing of the agreement on borders, minimizing the Republic's territorial concerns Russia. The period 2005-2012 reflects the most intensive stage in Russia-Kazakhstan bilateral relations throughout the period following the collapse of the USSR. In Kazakhstan, the government had declared a multicultural policy and asserted the need to maintain ethno-cultural consensus as an important condition of progress and to ensure Kazakhstan's prosperity. The period from 2005 to 2008 saw intensification in integration trends in Central Asia involving Russia and Kazakhstan. Simultaneously, Kazakhstan's priority in military affairs with Russia did not stop cooperation with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and with the United States (US) military in particular.
