ABSTRACT

Born on October 27, 1950, in Morristown, New Jersey, Fran is the daughter of Harold and Ruth Lebowitz, who run a furniture store in Morris Plains. By October 1978 the book had sold 90,000 copies in hard cover and Lebowitz received a $150,000 contract for the paperback rights. Lebowitz had only a limited high school education, but she has a virtual addiction to reading. She was expelled from the private school her parents sent her to, Wilson in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey, but did eventually pass the GED certificate examination. Her lack of training should not be mistaken for a lack of sophistication, however. She admitted for Contemporary Biography that she did not think that college was necessary for what she wished to do in her work and sarcastically included preparation for the David Susskind show as a legitimate reason for attending college.
