I further argue that the success of hard-line replies to the four-case argument is partially tied to thinking about desert in terms of fit. If the desert relevant to moral responsibility is best understood as fit, then, McKenna’s hard-line reply is compelling, but if desert is best understood as merit, not fit, the hard-line reply loses a lot of traction for reasons that will become clear.
