ABSTRACT

The great director Akira Kurosawa was famous for his many adaptations. How did he start the process of making such an extraordinary film as Rashomon, that would be acclaimed worldwide. Adaptations may start with ideas, research, and extensive reading. But what one is reading is often based on ideas, research, and extensive reading, too. It is a never-ending process - one with which it is exciting to be involved. Kurosawa loved reading novels, dramas, and short stories, and put his erudition to work as a filmmaker. The novel is about a freewheeling single mother who moves to a repressive French village, where she opens a chocolaterie. Many screenwriters, unless they are working as part of a team, lead relatively solitary lives during much of the writing process. Outlines and treatment can vary in length and format, however the important thing is to keep them in present tense, emphasizing what happens.
