ABSTRACT

Kenji Mizoguchi's Ugetsu is a classic film that takes its inspiration not only from Japanese theater and history, but from a French short story by Guy de Maupassant and classic Japanese ghost stories which were in turn influenced by ancient Chinese fiction. English director Gurinder Chadha's Bollywood-style romantic musical Bride and Prejudice changes the character of Elizabeth Bennet, who was played by Keira Knightley in the faithful adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, to Lalita Bakshi, played by Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai. In a book review of Mahfouz's novel Midaq Alley, reviewer Louis Proyect writes: A decisive factor in the ongoing war against Arab Peoples is the general lack of knowledge about and sympathy for their culture. The Bollywood adaptation of Devdas starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Paro and "King of Bollywood" Shahrukh Khan as Devdas – pays homage to Saratchandra Chattopadhyay, Pramathesh Chandra Barua, and Bimal Roy in one of its opening title cards.
