ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the role of drama in developing historical understanding. A case study shows how creative drama was developed from a local legend to enhance historical understanding. This can be used as a model, applied to other contexts. For example, the teaching strategies could be applied to the context of Anglo-Saxon invasions or settle - ment (Chapter 5), perhaps based on a legend in a primary source (Chapter 7), the Saxon dragon of Wormingford (Chapter 13) or to a local history study, in which case perhaps your archivist can suggest a story about a local person involved in a horrendous event, a newspaper account maybe (Chapter 7) or you could work with the Heritage School Programme (www.heritage england.org.uk).
