ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how Raven-Symoné, Selena Gomez, and Miley Cyrus star personae may have shifted during or immediately following their starring roles on Disney Channel. In July 2003, the year That's So Raven debuted, Vanity Fair devoted its cover and feature to teen girl celebrities. Several of the stars featured in the July 2003 issue of Vanity Fair had become famous for their television and film roles. Presented before the fold were Amanda Bynes, Ashley Olsen and Mary-Kate Olsen, Mandy Moore, and Hilary Duff. Since 2003, popular press outlets have continued to construct Symoné as both girl and woman by consistently referring to her in relation to her roles as a girl in The Cosby Show and That's So Raven, while also envisioning her as fully grown out of those roles—even when she was just beginning her tenure on Disney Channel at the age of 16.
