ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book brings multiple disciplines into conversation with one another, addressing issues in girlhood studies, celebrity studies, Disney studies, media industries scholarship, and theories of postfeminism. It aims to expand the critical theoretical work necessary for understanding girls' culture(s) and for the continued theorization of discursive constructions of girlhood. The book also establishes how girlhood functions in relation to Disney's corporate discourses and practices. It discusses Disney stars' performances of girlhood and celebrity in the service of Disney's franchising, diversification, and citizenship goals. The book further shows how images of girlhood on Disney Channel reproduce discourses of luminosity, magic, and stardom, in relation to idealized femininity and youth. It explores girl performers' work beyond Disney Channel series and interstitials, as media producers, music performers, celebrity-brand entrepreneurs, business moguls, and fashion designers, consultants, spokespeople, and models.
