In 1967, when proof of the CIA’s secret involvement with the Congress finally emerged, America was a country divided, and the Cold War had devolved into a series of drawn-out, peripheral conflicts. Twelve years into Vietnam, many Americans had turned against a war they deemed unwinnable.1
