ABSTRACT
By the standards of the computing industry, spellchecking has a long history. It began in the late 1950s – the days of mainframes and punched paper tape; an oft-cited paper is Damerau (1964). Accounts of various approaches can be found in Kukich (1992), Mitton (1996) and Jurafsky and Martin (2000).
