ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of the book. The book explores a close examination of identity construction through music and its interaction with other narrative elements that can provide a wealth of information about cultural connotations present in music, as well as how these ideas are used to modify characters' race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, and other aspects of identity. It presents musical information available within the films and the surrounding discourse rather than making assumptions about how different perceivers would understand films, although some shared cultural competency for audiences of US youth films can probably be assumed. The book examines how songs have been used in more recent youth films, soundtracks have undoubtedly reflected changes in how young people access, listen to, and make music. It expresses that the relationship between music and identity remains a relevant concern for scholarship on youth films.
