ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with a quote - something rather than nothing, one answer is quite bold: the reason that there is something rather than nothing is that it's impossible for there to be a situation where nothing at all exists. Thus, there has to be at least something, because matters could not have been otherwise. This at least gives us some explanation of why there's something rather than nothing. Next the chapter moves on to the thought experiment that discusses the possible worlds. Possible worlds are collections of spatio-temporally connected objects. If there are no objects, then there is no world. If there is no empty world, then there is no such possibility. This, the view that there is an empty world simply makes no sense. This is another place in metaphysics where different areas intersect with one another, where a theory about the nature of one thing seems to have implications for another debate.
