ABSTRACT

This chapter contains a very brief introduction to an artificial intelligence, followed by an example. It is followed by a short discussion and then a series of questions. Some are of the view that computers were able to manifest particular sorts of behaviour, then that would give us good reason to think that there was genuine intelligence present. The thought experiment goes some way to illustrating those conditions. Sally goes into a room. In the room she finds a computer with a chat-screen open. She notices that there are two named users available to chat with. Behind the scenes, here, is the famous 'Turing test' the idea being that any computer capable of fooling someone into believing that she is conversing with a human being is a computer that we might describe as being genuinely intelligent. The questions given in the chapter are intended to get the philosophy students thinking about these problems.
